It is important that you tell your specialist of any changes to the appearance or sensation of gum tissue in your mouth. This includes:
- Any changes in skin color
- The presence of sores
- Thickening of the skin inside the mouth
- Discomfort
- Chronic sore or dry throat
Most often, these abnormalities do not seriously affect your health and may be easily treated. However, in some cases, they may be indicative of more serious health issues such as oral cancer. It is important that if you detect any changes in the appearance of your mouth or gum tissue that you have the area examined.
Procedure: In many cases, a visual examination may be enough to diagnose the problem and in other cases a biopsy may be needed. A biopsy is the removal of a small amount of tissue to be more thoroughly examined in a laboratory.
